Dispute settlement of EU trade disputes between the WTO and FTAs mechanisms

Prof. Giorgio Sacerdoti

Former Chairman and Member of the WTO Appellate Body

Introduction by Prof. Christine Kaddous

19 April 2021

1:00 pm - 2:15 pm (CET)

Online event

The EU Commission, in its recent Trade Policy Review - An Open, Sustainable and Assertive Trade Policy of 18 February 2021 and Annex 1 on reforming the WTO, has restated its support for the multilateral trading system, including the improvement of its dispute settlement system to make it fully operative again. At the same time, the EU Commission has taken steps to enforce more decisively its bilateral trade agreements, including recourse to their dispute settlement mechanisms. The Commission has gone the bilateral way for the first time in 2020 by triggering bilateral panels with Ukraine and Korea. The conference will take stock of these developments also in light of the relevant provisions of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) between the EU and the UK.
